Mercury in rocks and minerals of the Skaergaard intrusion, East Greenland
نویسنده
چکیده
Mercury has been determined by radiochemical neutron-activation analysis in nineteen representative rocks from the Skaergaard intrusion and in the separated cumulus minerals of five. The chilled marginal gabbro contains o'23 ppm Hg, values in the Layered Series rocks ranging from o'o7 to o'34 ppm, in one exceptional case reaching I "23 ppm Hg. There is a tendency for mercury to be more abundant in leucocratic than in average or melanocratic rocks at a similar horizon. Somewhat higher levels of mercury are found in the granophyric rocks at the top of the intrusion. Apart from a weak and sporadic tendency to be preferentially enriched in plagioclase, the distribution of mercury between the various cumulus phases is fairly uniform and it is thought to occur as uncharged atoms mainly occupying spaces resulting from lattice defects and imperfections rather than in specific structural sites. The distribution pattern of mercury in the intrusion appears to be determined by its high volatility and chemical inertness; no real evidence of any chalcophile character is observed.

The Low-δ18O Late-Stage Ferrodiorite Magmas in the Skaergaard Intrusion: Result of Liquid Immiscibility, Thermal Metamorphism, or Meteoric Water Incorporation into Magma?
We report new laser fluorination oxygen isotope analyses of selected samples throughout the Skaergaard intrusion in East Greenland, particularly relying on ∼1-mg separates of the refractory, alteration-resistant minerals zircon, sphene, olivine, and ferroamphibole. We also reexamine published oxygen isotope data on bulk mineral separates of plagioclase and clinopyroxene. Our results show that t...
متن کاملPlatinum-group mineralization at the margin of the Skaergaard intrusion, East Greenland
Two occurrences of platinum-group elements (PGEs) along the northern margin of the Skaergaard intrusion include a sulfide-bearing gabbro with slightly less than 1 ppm PGE + Au and a clinopyroxene-actinolite-plagioclase-biotiteilmenite schist with 16 vol% sulfide and 1.8 ppm PGE + Au. Both have assemblages of pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite typical for orthomagmatic sulfides. Matching ...

East misho granitoid intrusion body, a part of Alborz-Azarbaijan zone, is located about 60 Km north west of Tabriz, NW Iran. This pluton with an area of about 50 km2 has cut percamberian unmetamorpic sedimentary rocks and, is covered with Permian sedimentary rocks with igneous nonconformity. Litological composition of the studied pluton displays a range of alkali granite, monzogranite and syeno...

The Tareek Darreh gold deposit is located 40km north of Torbat-e Jaam in the Khorassan-Razavi province, NE-Iran. The study area mainly comprises slightly metamorphosed, sedimentary rocks of Jurassic age including alternation of shale, siltstone, and sandstone. These rocks have been intruded by plutonic rocks such as gabbro-norite, diorite, quartz-diorite, and rhyodacite. The ore bodes are expos...
متن کاملFluorian garnets from the host rocks of the Skaergaard intrusion: Implications for metamorphic fluid composition
Zoned, silica-deficient, calcic garnets containing up to 5 mol% F substitution for 0 formed during contact metamorphism of basalts by the Skaergaard intrusion in East Greenland. Fluorian calcic garnets occur as a retrograde alteration of prograde wollastonite and clinopyroxene that fills vesicles and vugs in lavas 30-70 m from the intrusion. Paragenetically equivalent phases include fluorite, w...
